Is Trump Accounts legit?
Short answer: yes, the program is real — but the scams around it are real too. Trump Accounts is a federal program created by 2025 legislation (IRC §530A), administered through the Treasury Department and the IRS. Roughly 70 million accounts were auto-created starting Oct 1, 2026. Because it's new, confusing, and involves "free money," scammers are impersonating it aggressively.
🚩 Red flags — it's a scam if…
- ✕"Pay a fee to unlock your $250 / $1,000." Real deposits never ask you to pay first. Not a processing fee, not a tax prepayment — never.
- ✕"Claim within 24 hours or lose it." There is no official 24-hour deadline. Urgency is the scammer's favorite tool.
- ✕A text/email link asks for your SSN or bank password. The real claim flow verifies identity inside the official app — not via a link someone sent you.
- ✕A "Trump Accounts app" from a text, ad, or email. Only install the official app via links you verify yourself at treasury.gov or irs.gov.
- ✕"Guaranteed 20% returns if you move the money." Funds must stay in low-cost index funds during the growth phase; anyone promising to beat that is lying.
- ✕Someone offers to "claim it for you" for a cut. Only a verified parent/guardian can claim. Never share your child's SSN with a stranger.

If you've been targeted
- 1Stop. Don't pay, don't click further links, don't share more information.
- 2Report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and forward phishing emails/texts to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov.
- 3If you shared your child's SSN, consider a fraud alert or credit freeze with the three credit bureaus — and monitor for identity theft.
Common questions
Yes — Michael & Susan Dell pledged $250 per child for ~25M children (Dec 2025), and 10M+ deposits were completed by Oct 7, 2026. It's private philanthropy, paid automatically to eligible accounts. Anyone asking you to pay to receive it is a scammer. Full details →
Yes — a one-time federal seed deposit for U.S.-citizen children born 2025–2028, elected by a parent/guardian via IRS Form 4547. It goes into the child's account, never to you directly, and never requires a fee.
New program + "free money" + confusing rollout = perfect scammer bait. The auto-creation of 70M accounts in Oct 2026 gave scammers a plausible story ("your child's account is ready, just pay the fee"). Confusion is their business model.
